During the Labor Day weekend in Mississippi, two hunting parties were victorious in conflicts with alligators, which are known for their longevity. Claiborne County's new record is a 727-pound alligator captured with a crossbow and shotgun along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River.

During the first weekend of Mississippi’s alligator season a hunting party from Madison held the weight record for an alligator taken in the state. But the record only lasted about an hour.

Beth Trammell took a 13-foot, 5.5-inch long, 723.5-pound alligator early Sunday in Issaquenna County in the Yazoo Diversion Canal. It broke the previous weight record of 697.5 pounds.

Nonetheless, Mississippi Alligator program coordinator Ricky Flynt told WLBT TV (http://bit.ly/1acITT) that an hour after certifying Trammell's record, he certified another record-breaking croc.

Dustin Bockman, a UPS carrier from Vicksburg, captured the 727-pound alligator in Claiborne County's Mississippi River. It measured 13 feet, 4.5 inches.

The length record currently stands at 13 feet, 6.5 inches. In 2008, this alligator was captured in the Pascagoula River.

Ryan Bockman, Bockman's sibling, and Cole Landers, Bockman's friend, assisted him.

Brandon Maskrew of Ellisville established a record for the largest female alligator. Maskew captured the 295.3-pound alligator in the Pascagoula River on Friday night. The alligator was 10 feet long and now holds the records for length and weight.

A Brookhaven couple and their companions required two days to capture a 650-700 pound alligator from the Pascagoula River elsewhere in the state.

WLOX TV reports that first-time alligator hunters Michael Piper and his wife Bethany Piper began their quest aboard an 18-foot aluminum center console fishing boat on Friday. They were accompanied by experienced hunters and friends Terry Fauver, of Brookhaven, Eric Bowers, and Dean Nettles, also of Jackson.

Michael Piper stated, "We did not encounter a large number of alligators." We were pursuing a lesser alligator that we had spotted.

Suddenly, a large alligator grabbed their attention.

Friday at 11:45 p.m., a fishing pole caught it just south of the I-10 long bridge in Pascagoula.

"We once had five deep sea fishing rods with 200-pound test line, but five adults were unable to pull the alligator from the bottom," he said. "None of us had any notion about the size of this particular alligator. Once he was caught, he dove into the water. And when he surfaced, we were all astounded by his girth."

Michael Piper stated that they had to ask nearby boaters for assistance, and at 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, the 11′ 5 12" alligator was eventually killed with a shotgun and pulled into the boat.

He stated that they are having some of the alligator's flesh made into sausage. Additionally, they will have the cranium mounted.
